The Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee was developed by Gary Grunau and his partners. The hotel opened in 1980.
Gary Grunau started his civic-minded pursuit in 1978 when he agreed to become the lead developer for the Hyatt Regency Hotel on West Kilbourn Avenue after the first development firm had to back away from the project because of financing problems. Grunau Co. Inc. was the HVAC subcontractor for the new hotel. But he was convinced to become a general partner on the project.
The 18-story hotel, topped by the rotating Polaris restaurant and lounge, thrived for several years by being near the MECCA Convention Hall’s main entrance. MECCA opened in 1974, and was connected by a skywalk to the Hyatt.
In 2007, the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee was sold to an Atlanta-based company, Noble Investment Group. Noble has retained the Hyatt brand.
