Generally, the higher the star rating the better the hotel. Other factors are the location and presentation of the hotel – all of this you can check on these sites which will show you the average rates. You can filter highest and lowest prices.

If you stick with 4 and 5 star hotels this is your best bet for cleanliness.

Very lovely, romantic and cheap apartments in the heart of Tuscany: websitehttp://www.vacanzainchianti.it
located in a key position to visit all the Tuscany most important sites (Florence, Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano, Chianti countryside, Lucca, sea… all at 30-60 minutes driving distance)

All these places are very expensive. I can suggest this hotel in Venice: Locanda del Ghetto. You need to book in advance and better if you go in low season (high season in Venice is unbearable: overcrowded, expensive, terrible services). You can have a double with breakfast in this hotel for about 100 euro, which is a bargain.
Check on their web site.

Well, having recently travelled in most of the places you mention, if it is an average, and during the busier seasons (May—Sept) you might expect (for a comfortable without frils)a double to cost 90 to 130 US Dollars a night. When you go to the booking sites (and that is a good idea) note carefully if you are getting a room rate or a per person rate. Happy travels.

Well if you’re on your honeymoon you might as well do it right! I’ve traveled all around Italy for work and have stayed at the best of the best resorts.
For Rome, I’d recommend The Sheraton Roma or the Westin Excelsior.
You can view some video of the properties here:

For Milan, I’d recommend The Diana Majestic.

I find that if you look on trivago.co.uk you can find the range of prices for hotels in all of those areas and also see ratings of hotels in those areas. You can also pick a hotel that is close to something…for example an airport, which is quite handy.
I always use it when I am planning on going somewhere.

You can use http://www.hotelbooklet.com which compares more than 30 popular hotel reservations sites and shows the all available rates. There you can read guest reviews and find hotels in the desired cities that are best for you.
